Right now we remain in the eye of this crisis and every effort must be made to protect people and help the most vulnerable.

Edinburgh Climate Commissioner contributes to COP26 Network Brief

Edinburgh Climate Commissioner, Professor Dave Reay, has contributed to the COP 26 Universities Network Briefing on a Net Zero Emissions Economic Recovery from COVID-19 for the UK Government. The brief emphasises the importance of ensuring countries’ focus on economic growth post-COVID is based on sustainability and international cooperation in the run up to COP 26 (currently postponed until 2021).

 

City of Edinburgh Council to introduce emergency measures for pedestrians and cyclists

The City of Edinburgh Council have been working with Transport Scotland and Sustrans on a scheme to re-designate road space to pedestrians and cyclists, enabling them to move around the city while observing social distancing. It will be one of the first local authorities in the UK to introduce these emergency measures. This has been made possible with support from the £10 million fund to assist local authorities with introducing temporary travel solutions, announced by Cabinet Secretary Michael Matheson on 28th April.

Edinburgh City Council and Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation (ECCI) are progressing plans to establish an Edinburgh Climate Commission that will spearhead the city's medium and longer term response to the climate crisis with a major conference and youth summit in development for early 2020. 

Earlier this year, Edinburgh joined cities and nations all over the globe in announcing decisive action to tackle the climate emergency, setting the Capital the ambitious target of becoming a carbon neutral city by 2030.
